Why Swimming Is an Ideal Adult Fitness Activity

Swimming is the ideal fitness activity for older people. It increases muscle strength and flexibility, tones the body and is less injury prone than some other activities.

It is becoming more and more accepted that maintaining strength, flexibility and fitness are essential elements of adult life. Those wishing to live longer know that regular exercise is essential for maintaining good health. Increasing numbers of older people are now including swimming as part of their adult fitness programme for a number of reasons.

As we get older our bodies are inclined to slow down and become less flexible. Rather than accept this, we can slow down the aging process through regular exercise. As a low impact activity, swimming is ideal. Swimming is kinder on the aging body than many other fitness activities.

Less Injury

Although low impact, no one suggests swimming is injury free. There is the possibility of muscle injury, as in any sport. Lack of attention can cause crashing into the end of the pool. Crowded lanes can result in mid lap collisions. Eyes can hurt from chlorine; skin can dry out from being immersed in water. However, the chances of serious injury are minimal, compared with high impact activities such as pounding the pavement, which can cause muscle strain or jarred joints. Dodging other swimmers is less likely to cause permanent injury than dodging the bigger and faster vehicles on the road when cycling. With swimming, it’s just you and the water supporting your body. In fact, many athletes work out in the pool while they are recovering from muscle injury obtained in another more physical sport.

Controlled Length of Session

As we get older, some days things don’t work out the way we’d intended. Our bodies cry, enough is enough. If this happens when you are out running or cycling, there is a fair chance you’ll be a distance from home. When you are swimming and you run out of energy, you simply put your feet down or swim to the end of the pool and get out. Being able to control of the length of your swimming session gives you confidence. On the other hand, when you know you are feeling good, it’s easy to make the decision to do a few more lengths. Build your endurance gradually by increasing the number of lengths you swim.

Strength and Flexibility

There’s an old saying that, if you don’t use it, you lose it. As we get older our bodies start slowing down, losing flexibility and strength. We become less physically active. All adult fitness activities result in improved physical fitness and health. These benefits are well documented in other articles. One of the major attractions of swimming for older people is that it is gives a more complete workout, using all the muscle groups in the body. This gives the body improved muscle tone and a better overall appearance. The resistance provided by the water enables swimmers to increase muscular strength. The stronger our bodies are, the more easily we can cope with additional challenges in everyday life. As swimming is low impact, it is an ideal way of increasing strength and flexibility for older people.

Head to the Pool

Whether you are a beginning swimmer needing a few lessons to help you on your way, or an experienced swimmer, if you’re not quite as young as you used to be, swimming is the ideal low impact adult fitness exercise for you. Grab your bathing suit, goggles and a towel and head for the pool today. Start slowly and build up your distance gradually. You’ll soon notice how good you start feeling and how much easier daily life becomes. You’re never too old to benefit from swimming.
